Sustainable development is a fundamental principle underlying all EU actions. Through its trade policy, the EU ensures that its trade actions contribute to sustainable development and that there is coherence and mutual supportiveness between economic growth, social development, and environmental protection.

The EU has developed a consistent practice of including in its trade agreements provisions on aspects of sustainable development (labour, environment) of importance in a trade context. All recently concluded trade agreements include Trade and Sustainable Development chapters. An effective monitoring based on transparency, dialogue and cooperation with the involvement of civil society is also provided.

The purpose of this meeting is to further discuss and exchange views on this topic with civil society, including with regard to experiences in the implementation of Trade and Sustainable Development chapters under the EU agreements entered into force, the Sustainability Compact for Bangladesh launched in July 2013, and the green goods initiative.
