Since the Arab spring, civil society organisations have played a very important role in the Tunisian democratic transition. The EU has been fully supportive of strengthening civil society involvement in its discussions with Tunisian authorities in all policy areas. In this regard, a tripartite dialogue between the EU, Tunisian authorities and civil society has been established.

In the recently adopted Joint Communication “Strengthening EU support for Tunisia”, the EU reiterated its proposal that every formal EU-Tunisia meeting (notably Association Council, Association Committee and sub-committee of the Association Agreement of 1995) as well as every formal negotiation session should be preceded and followed by a meeting with civil society organisations.

In line with the above, the purpose of this meeting is to meet with both EU and Tunisian (via a videolink) civil society representatives to exchange views on the issues on the agendas of the upcoming “Trade, industry and services” and “Internal market” subcommittees to be held on 15 and 16 December in Brussels. Registered participants will receive the agendas, which are under preparation.

As regards the ongoing DCFTA negotiations, a civil society consultation published on DG Trade’s website is ongoing and further meetings dedicated to the negotiations will be planned in 2017.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Ms Monika Hencsey, Head of Unit, South Mediterranean and Middle East, Directorate-General for Trade and Ms Lamia Ben Mime, Chief of staff to the Tunisian Minister of Trade and Industry (via a videolink).
