Commissioner Lamy meets representatives of civil society: Summary report The meeting lasted for a little over two hours, and was split in three parts: a speech by the Commissioner on recent developments in trade policy and WTO issues as per attached, an exchange of views with the civil society organisations present on trade policy issues, and a discussion with these organisations on the DG Trade dialogue with civil society. The text of the speech has been made available here. The Commissioner's message focussed on the following elements: 1. Sustainable Trade: the work launched in DG Trade, to reinforce the sustainability elements in EU Trade policy - including a request for civil society to participate; 2. launch of the New Round: the EU continues to believe this is necessary, but concedes it will take some time; 3. Access to Medicines: the Commission is determined to continue the work on an action programme; 4. IGC - proposed modification of article 133 (trade policy): rather than a reduction of democratic control, the aim is to increase decision-making efficiency and reinforce the role of the European Parliament; 5. DG Trade dialogue with civil society: overall positive assessment by the Commissioner, although it still needs improvements: invitation for participants to comment and
