Meeting on trade and sustainable development: Brussels, 7 June 2001 The meeting discussed four major points: Bilateral trade relations/agreements and sustainability, recent developments in coherence between trade and aid policies, sectoral sustainability questions, and the (potential) role of NGOs in the promotion of a sustainability agenda. Participation, other than the civil society organisations (of which a list is attached), included four Member States (A, DK, ¿ and the Presidency), and representatives of geographical desks in Relex and Trade as well as DG Environment. Before tackling the agenda, chair gave a brief overview of the debate on the DG Trade working document in the 133 Committee. A brief discussion ensured, in which participants requested that the approach on specific issues be made more precise and detailed. Others pointed out the importance of mainstreaming environment and sustainability in all sectoral policies of the EU, and the goal of the Göteborg Council, in respect of which the General Affairs Council had recently issued recommendations.
