The purpose of the meeting is to consult civil society on the rationale, scope and strategic objectives of the future EU-Japan trade and economic relationship, ahead of the next Japan-EU Summit.

At the 19th Japan-EU Summit of 28 April 2010, the EU and Japan decided to establish a joint High Level Group (HLG) to identify options for the comprehensive strengthening of all aspects of Japan-EU relations.

As regards trade and economic aspects, the HLG is tasked with conducting a joint examination of the ways to further integrate the two economies by addressing all trade and economic issues of interest to both sides.

The HLG will table recommendations to EU and Japan leaders ahead of the 2011 EU-Japan summit which will be held in the spring (see in particular points 4 and 6 of joint press statement at http://www.deljpn.ec.europa.eu/modules/media/2010/100429.html?ml_lang=en ).

The online consultation is already open and the deadline for the submission of contributions is 5 November 2010. Click here to send your comments.
