#EUTrade Policy: what it is and why it matters

Welcome to #EUTrade Policy:  what it is and why it matters.

This programme aims to engage young people from across the EU, raising awareness about the practical implications of EU trade policy and letting stakeholders know how they can provide input into policy decisions which affect them and their communities.

Trade policy sets the direction for trade and investment in and out of the EU and affects businesses and individuals across EU member states and beyond. From agriculture to cars, successful trade policy leads to increased exports and employment across the EU. It keeps down costs for businesses and consumers of the products they need from abroad and it enables more than €5 trillion a year in inward investment.

Trade policy can also be an effective means of sharing and promoting European values through our trade agreements and the almost €7 trillion of EU investment with partners in the rest of the world.

In short, trade policy has a big impact on every business and citizen in the EU. And as such it is vital to ensure that stakeholders from all EU member states and all sectors of society are able to participate.

To this end, young people from various EU member states have been invited to participate in an event in Brussels hosted by Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade. The three days of expert presentations and discussions will be shared via a series of local events and online activities in the member states.

Explore this website to find out more about the event in Brussels 4-6, December 2017; about participating organisations; and to access links to relevant information about EU trade.

On 5 December, the participants to this event will attend the European Trade Policy Day.

As a bilateral Chamber of Commerce, we actively sustain European firms' exports as well as incoming or outgoing investments in the EU.

The Italy-China Chamber of Commerce (CCIC) is one of the founding members of the EU-China Business Association (EUCBA), the network of institutions and chambers of commerce aiming at developing commercial and diplomatic relations with the EU's most important trade partner, China.

The CCIC believes that providing a European perspective is necessary for the EU as well as for Chinese firms. On the one hand, understanding the potential and the impact of trade policies on their businesses could help EU SMEs and groups to benefit from the policies and strengthen their presence on local and international markets. On the other hand, Chinese enterprises are willing to gain access to single market value business opportunities at a national as well as at a European level. Therefore, giving them the chance to grasp the context in which their partners or their branch need to operate in could be relevant to easing trade relations and ultimately to boosting bilateral cooperation.

The Austrian Youth Council is the legally established body representing children and young people in Austria. They are also a recognised social partner, which means they are part of negotiations whenever the approximately 3 million young people below the age of thirty are concerned. However, not all topics that are relevant to youth or tackle young people's lives have the label 'youth' on them. This is why the Austrian Youth Council works on a manifold set of topics on a local, national and European scale.

Since its formation in 2011, the Young Transatlantic Initiative actively supports European-American relations by organizing events centred around current questions and topics of interest in this field. In doing so, our main areas of activity are transatlantic security and trade policy. Especially with regard to the latter, we promote the European Union's endeavours to reach free trade agreements with the United States and Canada.

In promoting these endeavours, we organize panels on CETA and TTIP featuring participants from different backgrounds and with points of view that are different from ours. We perform these events in order to have an opportunity to fact-check certain prejudices held by many people about free trade agreements and to get in touch with members of the public who would otherwise not be willing to attend discussions. In Germany, our representatives have participated in more than 50 discussions on CETA and TTIP.
