Commissioner De Gucht on…

…trade with countries from the ASEAN-region

"In Europe we know that in the future 90% of economic growth in the world will happen outside our borders. A huge proportion of that growth will happen in the ASEAN region. Far from seeing this as a threat, we Europeans see the stunning growth figures in Asia as part of the solution to our economic challenges."

… opening up of public procurement markets

"If our partners persist in keeping their markets closed they will lose out not once but twice. They will lose out on the boost to competitiveness from open procurement at home. And they will lose out when their companies no longer have access to our lucrative public markets here in Europe."

TRADE DEFENCE

European Commission launches consultation on modernisation of Trade Defence Instruments
While the global economic environment has changed significantly over the last decade, the rules of the EU's trade defence instruments have remained largely unchanged for more than 15 years.
The European Commission has now launched a public consultation to explore different ways to modernise these Trade Defence Instruments which are very important to the EU industry, as they are often the only means companies have to react to unfair international trading practices. The Public Consultation on the modernisation of Trade Defence Instruments is open to all stakeholders and respondents can send their contributions until 3 July 2012.
