EU reimposes tariff duties on Ukrainian imports of agricultural products
The EU reimposed duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural products from 6 June and hopes to reach an agreement on new quotas.
The EU temporarily waived duties and quotas on agricultural products in June 2022 after Russia's full-scale invasion to compensate Ukraine for the large economic losses in its exports, after Russia threatened its traditional Black Sea shipping lanes.
However, EU farmers complained that large shipments of cheaper Ukrainian sugar imports particularly of sugar, poultry, and eggs under the wartime tariff exemptions had hurt local supplies.
The pre-war quota regime, applicable from 6 June, includes lighter rules on import licenses for some goods like poultry and eggs, where instead of requiring licenses, quotas will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Negotiations on a new EU-Ukraine long-term deal started on 2 June with the aim of having a deal by summer.
