The aim of this meeting is to engage with EU civil society on the economic opportunities of Africa and the role that the European Union can play in fostering these as trading partner, aid donor and source of investment. The particular context is that of the Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs, and the Economic Partnership Agreements between the EU and Sub-Saharan African and the free trade agreements between EU and North African countries as 'building blocks' within that Alliance.

On 12 September 2018, on the occasion of President Juncker’s State of the European Union, the Commission issued a Communication on a new Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs: Taking our partnership for investment and jobs to the next level. The Alliance proposes an economic agenda for Africa and Europe as equal partners. It includes important ideas for boosting investment, skills, dialogue and trade in Africa. These include linkages with the External Investment Plan, Jobs and Growth Compacts, the Task Force Rural Africa and other forums for enhanced dialogue, the African Continental Free Trade Area, the Economic Partnership Agreements and Free Trade Agreements in North Africa.
