#EUTrade Policy: what it is and why it matters

This page describes past events and is no longer updated.

Welcome to #EUtrade Policy:  what it is, why it matters.

This programme aims to engage young people from across the EU, raising awareness about the practical implications of EU trade policy and letting stakeholders know how they can provide input into policy decisions that affect them and their communities.

Trade policy sets the direction for trade and investment in and out of the EU and affects businesses and individuals across EU member states and beyond. From agriculture to cars, successful trade policy leads to increased exports and employment across the EU. It keeps down costs for businesses and consumers of the products they need from abroad and it enables more than €5 trillion a year in inward investment.

Trade policy can also be an effective means of sharing and promoting European values through our trade agreements and the almost €7 trillion of EU investment with partners in the rest of the world.

In short, trade policy has a big impact on every business and citizen in the EU. Today, the EU’s exports to countries outside Europe support over 31 million jobs across the 28 Member States – and over 19 million jobs in countries outside Europe. In the coming years, some 90% of world growth is forecast to be outside the EU. If we want to tap into that growth, we need to be able to continue accessing those markets Therefore, it is vital to ensure that stakeholders from all EU member states and all sectors of society are able to learn more about EU trade policy.

To this end, young people from various EU member states have been invited to participate in an event in Brussels hosted by Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade. The three days of expert presentations and discussions will be shared through a series of local events and online activities in the member states.

Explore this website to find out more about the event in Brussels 26-28 November 2018; about participating organisations; and to access links to relevant information about EU trade.

On 27 November, the participants in this event will attend the European Trade Policy Day.

The BDL was founded on December 18, 1949 in Fredeburg. On August 27, 1950, the first German rural youth day took place in Mainz with about 700 participants.

But the roots of the BDL go back to 1923. At that time there was a federation of the German rural youth. In July 1935 it was dissolved. 1949 was followed by the constitution of the BDL as a non-denominational and non-party youth organization of the German Farmers Association DBV.

In the course of structural change in the 60s, the BDL increasingly developed from the representative of rural youth to the representation of youth in the countryside. At the end of 2015, the BDL Federal Assembly decided in future to go its own organizational way. The delegates thus initiated the reorganization of the BDL into a legally-authorized association . That process was finished in February 2016.

Today, the BDL is the largest youth association in rural areas and represents the interests of around 100,000 young people in order to preserve and create the livelihood and living prospects of the younger generation in the countryside.

INEKO Institute is a non-governmental non-profit organization established in support of economic and social reforms which aim to remove barriers to the long-term positive development of the Slovak economy and society.

The Institute’s mission is to support a rational and efficient economic and social reform process in the Slovak Republic (SR), through research, information development and dissemination, advice to senior government, political and self-governing officials, and promotion of the public discourse. It also focuses on those areas of social policy on the regional as well as the European level critical to the economic transformation of the SR. It draws on the best experience available from other transition countries and members of the European Union (EU) and the OECD.

Wide-reaching changes brought about by industrial revolution, democratization, globalization and informatization have hit our region in the last few decades. Our society is unable to cope in this world with the rules and values valid for thousands of years any more – yet it should not ignore them either. For instance, there was no need to take care of the elderly through the first or second pillars of the pension system a thousand years ago. The seniors’ relatives provided the care reliably instead. No doubt that the relatives’ role is important today as well, yet it needs to be combined with the new schemes that would take in account changing conditions such as rising migration, and that would be able to take a good care of an increasing number of people who are not tied to small communities anymore. Hence the main mission of INEKO: to search for an optimal speed and scale of an “upgrade” of society’s operating system, its ethics code.
